‘Unprecedented’ demand for rain barrels in Calgary leads to shortage - Calgary

“Calgarians are gearing up for possible water restrictions this summer, but there is a significant obstacle in their way – a rain barrel shortage. As the city prepares for a dry spell with minimal rain, the demand for rain barrels has skyrocketed, leaving many residents empty-handed and on waiting lists.

**The Rush for Rain Barrels**

On a Saturday morning at the Dalhousie Co-op, people lined up for a Green Calgary rain barrel sale, hours before it was set to begin. Some eager individuals arrived at 6 a.m., determined to secure a much-needed barrel. Unfortunately, for those who came later, the overwhelming demand left them without a rain barrel and placed them on a waiting list. Calgary resident Rowena Campbell expressed her disappointment, stating, “With the forecast for a drought and very little rain this summer, I thought I’ll do what I can and come get a rain barrel, but I was too late.”

**Unprecedented Demand**

Lex van der Raadt, the executive director of Green Calgary, acknowledged the unprecedented demand for rain barrels this year. Sale organizers had anticipated an increase in demand, but the level of interest exceeded their expectations. The concerns about drought and uncertainty surrounding water restrictions have prompted many residents to invest in rain barrels for water conservation.

**A Sustainable Solution**

Green Calgary is working diligently to address the shortage by ordering barrels from Ontario for the first time. These rain barrels are made from upcycled food products, promoting sustainability and environmental consciousness. Furthermore, old rain barrels were brought in for repairs at the sale, highlighting the community’s commitment to water conservation.

**Hope for the Future**

Despite the challenges posed by the rain barrel shortage, there is optimism that everyone who wants a rain barrel will eventually obtain one. The city of Calgary is committed to ensuring that all residents have access to rain barrels by the end of June. As the demand for rain barrels continues to rise, it is essential for individuals to prioritize water conservation efforts and work together to mitigate the impact of water scarcity.

In a time of uncertainty and environmental challenges, the shortage of rain barrels serves as a reminder of the importance of sustainable practices and water conservation. By taking proactive steps to preserve water resources, Calgarians can contribute to a more environmentally conscious and resilient community.”
