“A death sentence”: Palestinians in Gaza condemn Israel’s decision to end UNRWA agreement

Israel’s foreign ministry confirmed Monday that it will be terminating its longstanding agreement with the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA). UNRWA provides aid to millions of refugees across Gaza and the West Bank.

The decision to cut ties 57-year-spanning ties comes days after Israeli parliament passed legislation to ban the organization internally — claiming it had been infiltrated by the militant group Hamas. UNRWA has denied these allegations.

Following the passing of legislation, World Health Organization (WHO) Director-General Tedros Ghebreyesus condemned Israel on Friday, saying the decision “contravenes Israel’s obligations and responsibilities,” adding it has “jeopardized the lives and health of all who depend on these essential services.”

With Monday’s update, Palestinians are now speaking out about “catastrophic” move. “Palestinians will be deprived from [aid which they are depending on amid the Israel-Hamas conflict],” a displaced man in Deir al-Balah said. “This is considered a death sentence for Palestinians inside the Gaza Strip,” he added.
