"Celebrating Unity and Diversity at Memorial Park
Memorial Park was abuzz with patriotism and diversity yesterday during the Canada Together flag-raising ceremony. The event featured a moving colour guard ceremony by the Royal Canadian Legion, a heartwarming rendition of O Canada by Rri Bye, and inspiring speeches by local dignitaries. The highlight of the ceremony was when a local family, who had recently become citizens in May, had the honor of raising the nation’s flag.
A Unifying Tradition
Complimentary hotdogs and red and white cupcakes added to the festive atmosphere as attendees celebrated Canada’s birthday. Brad Woods, the city’s partnerships and events coordinator, played a key role in organizing the event and was delighted to see the tradition continue. The warm weather and the sense of community drew in a crowd of over 600, with Mayor Al Bridal estimating the attendance to be close to 700 people.
Speaking about the event, Mayor Bridal shared, “The general sentiment with all the speeches is that we’re so fortunate to live here in Canada and in Swift Current; it’s a great place to live.”
Embracing Inclusivity
Rebecca Anderson, the CEO of tourism for the city of Swift Current, expressed gratitude for the perfect weather and the diverse turnout at the event. She highlighted the theme of togetherness, stating, “We named our event Canada Together, and that’s what you see here.”
One of the event’s cherished traditions is honoring the newest Canadian citizens in the community. These newcomers are introduced, their stories shared, and they are given the privilege of raising the flag to the tune of God Save the King. Anderson emphasized the importance of recognizing and welcoming newcomers to the community.
Reflecting on History and Heritage
Representing the Lii Bufloo Métis Local #35, Elder Barb Parchman shared a poignant perspective on Canada Day. Despite feeling gratitude for her European ancestors who settled in Canada for a better life, Parchman acknowledged the pain and losses her native family endured. She stressed the importance of understanding and reconciling the true history of Canada, calling for a better future built on mutual respect and understanding.
