On Monday, residents of Kirkland Lake joined Canadians nationwide in commemorating the country’s 157th birthday. The festivities were marked by events at two main locations – the Toburn mine site and the Museum of Northern History.
Toburn Mine Site: A Day of Family Fun
The Toburn Operating Authority hosted a day in the park with activities for all ages, including gold panning, games, classic car displays, and even a petting zoo with goats, rabbits, chickens, and a miniature donkey named Peanut. Committee chair Mike Leahy highlighted the educational aspect of the event, offering children a hands-on experience with mining through gold panning.
Museum of Northern History: Tradition and Music
Simultaneously, a large crowd gathered at the Sir Harry Oakes Chateau for Canada Day celebrations at the museum. Children engaged in a scavenger hunt indoors while outdoor games kept them entertained on the facility’s lawn. The museum auxiliary served Canada Day cupcakes and refreshments, followed by live music performances by local musicians to entertain the crowd.

Kaitlyn McKay, Supervisor of Museum Services at the Museum of Northern History, expressed her joy at celebrating Canada’s birthday on a perfect sunny day. Timiskaming-Cochrane MPP John Vanthof, in attendance at the event, emphasized Canada’s role as a beacon for tolerance and immigration, refuting claims of a broken nation. He stated that despite challenges, Canada remains a place of opportunity and diversity.
