Hundreds of tourists gathered at a football pitch near the Kos International Airport in Greece on Monday, after being evacuated from nearby hotels following raging fires that tore through dry mountainous terrain in the area, according to an eyewitness.

In videos captured by a tourist on the scene, fires are visible in the distance, with thick black plumes of smoke rising in the air.

Reuters news agency was able to verify the footage from matching the terrain to topographic rendered maps, buildings and structural layout as seen on file, satellite and corroborating images.

Dozens of fires broke out across Greece, including two close to the capital, Athens, over the weekend.
