[Music] but the unknown solder is special representative of all the Newland regiment but in this case the most detailed investigation was purposely not carried out that means analyzing human remains analyzing the archaeological data doing DNA testing to try to find this uh individual’s identity doing genealogy research uh to find family members and things like that and and in this particular case for the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier I had to do the exact opposites of my job uh so it’s it’s been a little uh conflicting emotions of um I I cannot identify this person and and that’s the whole purpose of the field of forensic anthropology is to return an identity and a face to an individual and the only way we could uh achieve this result of having a Tomb of the Unknown Soldier in St John’s is by doing none of that is that frustrating for you a little bit yes

Millions are celebrating Canada’s 157th birthday this year – as they do every year – with fireworks, food and family. In Newfoundland, it is a day of mourning for one of the bloodiest battles of the First World War.

This year, the province will mark the day with a ceremony for the recently repatriated Unknown Soldier, whose epitaph will stand for the hundreds of men who died during the war and do not have tombs of their own.
