“Railway Workers Vote for Potential Strikes as Negotiations Stall
Union members at CN and CPKC railways have made it clear that they are prepared to take action if negotiations with their respective companies do not lead to satisfactory resolutions. In a resounding show of solidarity, almost 99 percent of the union members at both railways voted in favor of reauthorizing strike action.
The Road to Reauthorization
After an initial vote in favor of strike action on May 1, the 60-day time limit on the vote expired, prompting the need for a second strike vote. This decision was not taken lightly, as the union felt compelled to take this “unusual step” in order to ensure that their voices were heard.
A Call for Clarity and Certainty
CPKC has expressed its desire for clarity and certainty regarding the potential consequences of the ongoing negotiations. The railway is awaiting a decision from the Canada Industrial Relations Board on the federal labor minister’s referral concerning maintenance of activities during a strike or lockout.
Rail Company’s Proposal for a Cooling-Off Period
In an effort to provide stakeholders with stability and predictability, CPKC has requested an extension of the cooling-off period for 30 days following the CIRB’s decision on maintenance activities. This proposal aims to allow all parties involved to plan accordingly for any potential work stoppage.
The Union’s Stance
Paul Boucher, president of the Teamsters Canada Rail Conference, emphasized the union’s willingness to return to the bargaining table with their renewed strike mandate. The union is committed to working with federal government mediators to find a resolution that addresses their concerns regarding crew schedules, work hours, and fatigue management.
