A giant sinkhole in Alton, Ill., opened up in the middle of a soccer field on Wednesday, forcing the park to close.
Drone footage shows the aerial view of the massive hole, estimated to be around 30 metres wide, in the turf at Gordon Moore Park. Officials say the hole is approximately 15 metres deep.
The sinkhole, which formed at around 10 a.m., was the result of a mine collapsing, local media reported. A spokesperson from the New Frontier Materials mine confirmed that their underground mine experienced “a surface subsidence and opened a sink hole.”
Alton Mayor David Goins told local media that nobody was on the field at the time of the collapse or got hurt. All scheduled events at the park were cancelled on Wednesday and Thursday, as investigations continued.
