“Manitoba Shines Bright in the Order of Canada Honours”

In a recent announcement by Governor General Mary Simon, the Order of Canada has welcomed four outstanding Manitobans to its prestigious list of appointees. Established in 1967, the Order of Canada is a symbol of recognition for individuals who have made remarkable and lasting contributions to our nation across various sectors.

The Distinguished Manitobans

Among the new appointees is Frances Estelle Reed Simons, a professor emerita at the University of Manitoba. Known for her groundbreaking work in the field of anaphylaxis diagnosis and management, Simons has established herself as a prominent figure in clinical immunology and allergy, serving as an educator and mentor.

Another notable inclusion from Manitoba is community builder Tina Jones, the chair of the Health Sciences Centre Foundation. Jones is widely recognized for her advocacy in philanthropy and healthcare advancement. As the founder of Jones & Company Wine Merchants and a key supporter of The Rink, which offers training in hockey, ringette, and figure skating, Jones is celebrated for her pioneering spirit in business.

Christina Jean Keeper, a multi-talented Manitoba native, also joins the Order of Canada roster. An award-winning actress, producer, and former politician, Keeper made significant strides in Parliament as one of the first Cree members. Her advocacy for important bills related to Indigenous rights, including Jordan’s Principle and the UN declaration, as well as her work on the issues of missing and murdered Indigenous women and girls, has left a lasting impact on Canada’s policy landscape.

Lastly, William James Gordon Kirby, the founder and executive director of the Centre for Contemporary Canadian Art, brings his innovative contributions to the Order of Canada. Kirby’s creation of the Canadian Art Database has elevated awareness of contemporary Canadian art and artists both domestically and internationally.

Recognizing Excellence

Appointments to the Order of Canada are not taken lightly, as they reflect the highest levels of achievement and dedication in various fields. The advisory council carefully considers recommendations before the governor general makes the final decision.

As these deserving Manitobans prepare to receive their Order of Canada insignia at an upcoming investiture ceremony, it is a moment to celebrate their remarkable accomplishments and contributions to our country. Their diverse talents and unwavering dedication serve as inspirations for future generations to continue striving for excellence and making a positive impact on our society.

The Order of Canada continues to shine a spotlight on exceptional individuals who have shaped the fabric of our nation, reminding us of the importance of recognizing and honoring those who selflessly contribute to the betterment of our country.”
