an update now on the deadliest bus crash in Manitoba history the bus driver who suffered severe brain injuries will not face charges authorities today revealed new details on what happened ctv’s dant anger has that story her feels special it’s been a year since Valerie owens’s 87-year-old mother Claudia was killed in one of the deadliest crashes on a Manitoba Highway one year trying to cope and holding on to Memories she was Lively like she liked color she liked to dance she liked music she liked to go to church she liked to sing her mother was among 17 killed when a bus carrying 24 dolphin seniors collided with a semi on June 15th 2023 no charges are being authorized in relation to the Collision now after one year mounties say their comprehensive investigation has wrapped up I need to say this was a very tragic collision and it happened because of a choice made by the bus driver however we cannot prove that that choice that day was a result of anything criminal the investigation determined the bus driver stopped before crossing the intersection of Highway 5 at the Trans Canada passing through a yield sign in the center median and into the path of the oncoming semi the bus driver did not appear to see the semi truck coming Crown prosecutor Chris Vanderhoof says investigators have not been able to speak with the driver of the bus who suffered a traumatic brain injury he has no recollection of the incident making it impossible to interview him Vander says the bus had three separate blind spots which contributed to the crash and confirmed there’s no evidence the driver was on his phone at the time or driving dangerously all this leading to the decision not to authorize charges under the criminal code or the highway traffic act while the crown is certainly aware of the consequences of this mass casualty and the tragedy of that the families have had and continue to deal with there is no public interest in proceeding against the bus driver this news bringing some level of closure to Owen and her family I felt relief relief that there’s an answer Danton younger CTV News Winnipeg
