Danielle Smith says Alberta is opting out of the federal dental plan the plan is meant to help people Access Dental Care but many Alberta dentist have been refusing to sign up Shayan skolsky reports Alberta’s Premier is pushing back against ottawa’s plan to provide oral health care to millions of Canadians previously unable to afford it Danielle Smith says the Canadian dental care plan infringes on provincial jurisdiction instead Alberta is seeking an agreement to get the provinces Shar of federal Dental funding to expand coverage to lowincome albertans last December Ottawa promised to spend $13 billion over the next 5 years on the plan Canadians who filed a tax return last year with no access to dental insurance earning less than 990,000 are eligible the program already covers kids under 12 and seniors over 65 now it will include all children under 18 and anyone with a valid disability tax credit certificate create more paperwork on top of that so there’s such an unknown we don’t quite know who’s covered Dr Hans hsen makes up the roughly 60 to 70% of Alberta dentists not currently signed up for the program citing concerns of misinformation arguing patients are being promised free care when they may still be expected to pay out of pocket this is not a free program that’s a very real concern so many Canadians have been told their Dental will now be free with dental offices reporting that they’re having to spend up to an hour a day taking people away from Clinical time and administrative time to explain the program concerns are echoed by the president of the Canadian Dental Association who says the plan will also limit patient Choice you’re also going to have see people left in a very sad situation of having to go dental office to dental office asking are you taking part we’ve been working very closely with the dental associations Canada’s Health Minister insists dentists were consulted in the plan’s creation promising work is underway to get more on board the minister has not responded to CTV News request for comment on the premier’s decision to opt out of the program Shayan skolski CTV News Edmonton
