“Ensuring Safety on the Waters: A Day of Training with the OPP and Parks Canada”

Amidst the picturesque Midland Harbour, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and Parks Canada staff from Georgian Bay Islands National Park gathered for a day of rigorous training to enhance safety on the waters. Staff Sergeant Christina Schroeder emphasized the importance of experience-based training for the marine unit, especially in challenging weather conditions where emergencies are more likely to occur.

Training Day on the Waters

The members of the OPP marine unit and Parks Canada staff engaged in qualification exercises focused on search-and-rescue scenarios and enforcement of water safety regulations. From impaired operation to ensuring the proper use of life jackets, the training day aimed to sharpen their skills and preparedness for any situation that may arise on the waters.

Drones for Enhanced Safety

Members of the Midland Penetanguishene Fire Department showcased their advanced technology by operating a drone equipped with various functionalities to track watercraft and aid in rescue missions. The use of drones not only provides an aerial perspective but also enhances the efficiency and effectiveness of emergency response efforts on the water.

Public Responsibility for Water Safety

Staff Sergeant Schroeder highlighted the importance of cooperation from the public in maintaining safety on the waters. Emphasizing the need for compliance with regulations such as carrying life jackets for every individual on board, she urged boaters to cooperate with officers during routine patrols and inspections.

A Compelling Call to Action

As the training day came to a close, the OPP reinforced the significance of vigilance and responsibility on the waters. In case of spotting a suspected impaired driver or any safety concern, the public was reminded to report to authorities promptly. By working together with law enforcement and prioritizing safety measures, we can ensure enjoyable and secure experiences on the waters for all.
