Global National: June 26, 2024 | Newfoundland and Labrador cod moratorium ends after 32 years

38

[Music] on this Wednesday night Go Fish why a decades long ban on Commercial cod fishing off Newland and Labrador is being lifted my reaction is there going to be some fat Cod out there what it means for a province built on fishing and the politics at play take a look at this a house in Winnipeg explodes the blast leaving a neighborhood in sha ferocious floods in the US Midwest why things are expected to get worse and retracing his steps this trip is actually going against the current honoring the Journey of an indigenous hero global national with Donna freezen good evening and thanks for joining us there’s a big development about an industry that’s woven into the Heritage and culture of part of this country the commercial Cod fishery in Newland and Labrador is opening again in a limited way after 32 years it’s impossible to overstate what a blow the 1992 shutdown of commercial cod fishing was to New Finland overnight about 30,000 people lost their livelihoods boats were docked fish plants closed hundreds of coastal communities that depended on COD for Generations lost their economic and cultural heart the Cod stocks that Europeans once said were so thick they could hardly row a boat through them had been overfished Eric senson has our top story on why the moratorium on COD is being partially lifted now and what it means for the province it’s a small increase but historic says Ottawa expanding the northern Cod fishery that for Generations was more than an economic necessity it was a way of life in new Landon Labrador I think it’ll be a good thing for the province now they await the details emotionally I’m excited to hear that it’s happening again 32 years ago the federal fisheries Minister needed a massive police esort and fishermen tried to force their way in for this devastating announcement that effective at midnight tonight there will be a moratorium and harvesting of Northern Cod there were protests and blockades of foreign vessels foreign trollers had overfished but Canadian officials too had overestimated the Cod sustainability mistakes that killed off first the Cod then tens of thousands of jobs fish isn’t there to catch anyway we knew that never ever thought to come to this day see it is the plan now is to carefully build back the fishery the moratorium will be lifted in areas where the Cod were historically plentiful off Labrador to the north of newfinland and to the East and the grand Banks the allowable catch this year will be 18,000 tons of cod a far cry from 250,000 tons in the 1980s still Cod stocks remain very low and A Renewed commercial fishery is a risk says the author of cod collapse we continue to fish you know not just Cod but critically depleted Cod by no stretch of the term is this the historic return of that commercial Northern Cod fishery Cod was King conservative strategist Tim Powers worked for the federal fisheries Minister during the Cod crisis long ago he thinks now the federal liberals hope to bolster the six liberal seats they hold in the province all the seats in newlander Labrador are in Jeopardy not really surprising that the Cod fishery is being reopened right now it when to see it and while there are Skeptics about what it will mean I have to see what’s on the go I guess you know what I mean before I make a decision if it’s good or not others welcome the news are going to be some fat C out there in it if they haven’t been touched in 32 years they’re going to be that big an industry that meant so much to new finlanders and labradorians ways of life is showing signs of a comeback Eric senson Global News Toronto there is cautious optimism about a wildfire that’s threatening the town of Churchill Falls in Labrador it’s raining today and Premier Andrew Fury says that is providing some relief the weather conditions are favorable such that the wind pattern in particular should keep it away from keep it away from the town that combined with um thank God some rain yesterday remaining workers at the major hydroelectric plant in Churchill Falls were forced to flee that plant is now being operated remotely the fires knocked out power in two Western communities Labrador city is now getting electricity from Quebec the town of wabush is still in the dark in Winnipeg crews are working to put out a fire after what’s being described as a catastrophic explosion of a home firefighters say this house was destroyed when they arrived on the scene this morning it’s not known what happened or if anyone was home at the time there are no reports of anyone in neighboring houses getting hurt but some will not be going home toight their homes are significantly damaged there’s an update on that tragic collision between a bus and a semi-trailer truck in Manitoba last year the crown and the RCMP said today no charges will be laid against the driver of the bus 17 seniors on board that minibus were killed it drove into the path of the truck its believed blind spots on the bus prevented the driver from seeing the truck the 62-year-old bus driver survived but suffered a traumatic brain injury can’t recall the incident and this condition is not expected to improve I need to say this was a very tragic collision and it happened because of a choice made by the bus driver however we cannot prove that that choice that day was a result of anything criminal the crash happened near the town of carbury as the bus driver was attempting to cross the Trans Canada Highway and drove into the path of the truck RCMP who interviewed Witnesses and reviewed dash cam video from the truck say the truck driver had the right of way the decision not to pursue charges was shared with the victim’s families during a meeting in Dolphin on Tuesday it looks like a strike could be back on at WestJet talks between the airline and its aircraft mechanics have broken down again the airline mechanics could walk off the job as early as Friday last week the union called off a strike after both sides agreed to return to the negotiating table WestJet says if a deal isn’t reach flights will be cancelled as early as tomorrow why are we still working through the plan so it’s going to be a double digit number um and then it will grow as we approach the actual strike deadline on Friday we’ve been here before the airline preemptively canceled dozens of flights earlier this month ahead of a leing strike as questions swirl about the fortunes of the federal Liberal Party and its leader those closest to prime minister Justin Trudeau are putting on a public show of unwavering support despite the byelection defeat in Toronto this week in what’s long been a liberal stronghold as Mackenzie reports if they’re ready for a change they certainly aren’t saying so I think a lot of us have to take a step back and give our heads a shake screw it on a little better a Frank admission from immigration Minister Mark Miller about the Liberals future a message coming from not just a cabinet minister but a close friend and former groomsman of Justin Trudeau my advice as a close friend would not be given publicly my advice to him as a minister uh and as a colleague professionally uh is absolutely to to stay on them a sentiment shared by a number of current cabinet colleagues many of whom owe their own electoral success to the Prime Minister it’s really easy to listen to Twitter and Tik Tok and social media I challenge anyone to actually spend time in communities like GLA Bay and really see what’s happening on the ground in Canada but the message on the ground in Toronto a massive rejection of the Trudeau liberals losing a seat held for 30 years in Monday’s byelection yet trust in the Prime Minister and his message has not wavered publicly he is still the most important leader of a generation to make transformational change in this country and if you look at the polls the addictions minister is right only former Bank of Canada Governor Mark Carney and Deputy Prime Minister Christia freland could even slightly increase the Liberals chances as leader other potential leadership candidates Minister Shan Frasier Anita Anand Melanie Jolie and Francois Philipe champagne would all put the Liberals in an even worse political situation but that hypothetical race seems unlikely to happen soon none of the members of parliament’s or ministers that I’ve spoken to have told me that they they think that the Prime Minister should go that lack of organized push back against Trudeau’s leadership a distinct change in treatment compared to what jean cran Paul Martin and even Stefan dong got from liberals Donna a remarkable loyalty to a prime minister down 20 points in the polls okay McKenzie gray in Ottawa thanks millions of Americans are dealing with severe weather days of torr poal rains have caused catastrophic flooding in at least four midwest states and as Jackson prco explains more storms are on the way days of catastrophic flooding have left entire Community submerged across four states with fears the worst is yet to come it’s beyond words I mean to us it’s a situation to the families the homeowners this is their lives in Minnesota a home was swallowed by the raging Blue Earth River after the nearby Rapidan Dam suffered a paral failure days after it became clogged with debris the dam is still intact for now a full breach would send a surge of water Downstream the flooding caused a rail Bridge connecting Iowa and South Dakota to collapse up and down the Mississippi and Missouri Rivers residents are racing against the clock to prepare hair before floodwaters Peak 3 million people are already impacted the city has deployed many pumps through the area but unfortunately we just can’t keep up with a a river that is Flowing at that pace with that much water there’s absolutely nothing we can do to stop it the flooding came after days of heavy rain and there are more storms in the forecast what’s happened is we’ve inundated the ground there’s nowhere for it to go as residents keep an eye on the surging water they’re also watching the sky hoping a break in the weather will begin their long road to recovery Jackson prosco Global News Washington WikiLeaks founder Julia Assange is back home in Australia for the first time in 14 years small group of supporters clapped and cheered as he stepped off the plane in canbar he waved at the crowd and hugged his wife for the first time as a free man the two married two years ago while he was in a British prison assange’s legal battle goes back to 2010 when Wikileaks released hundreds of thousands of classified us documents Washington claimed Assange put lives in danger by doing that his legal team said today the US government admitted not a single let his lawyers and family do the talking he wanted to be here but you have to understand what he’s been through he needs time he needs to recuperate Assange had been traveling for 2 days following his 14 years of legal battles that included 5 years in a British prison The Saga ending with with a guilty plea under the US Espionage Act to one count of conspiring to disclose National Defense information this is the criminalization of Journalism and while the ple deal does not set a Judicial precedent it’s not a court decision the prosecution itself sets a precedent the Australian government stands up for Australian citizens that’s what we do Australia had been lobbying London and Washington for a deal although the White House said Wednesday it had nothing to do with a timing The Plea comes just after London’s High Court recently granted a sanes legal team yet another right to appeal and just as the British conservatives look set to lose power a potential Trump victory in November’s us election would have changed the math too the former president himself is facing charges under the same Espionage Act it’s a complex legislation that is continuing to put challenge to the way we think about the First Amendment and freedom of expression in this country and that is likely uh to only be exacerbated uh by the current uh decision with Assange it may not be long before Assange tells his own story perhaps motivated by the half million cost of chartering a jet to finally get home Redmond Shannon Global News London Canadian billionaire businessman Frank stronic is attempted military coup heavily armed troops had taken over the capital Central Square and stormed the presidential Palace a former military General who’d recently been fired said he wanted to restructure democracy but Bolivia’s president named a new Army commander who ordered the troops to stand down it appears theyve begun to pull back from the palace and the former General has been arrested in a dramatic reversal Kenya’s president is scrapping his unpopular tax hikes that triggered huge protests across that country the streets of the capital were eerily calm today this is a major victory for the protesters who had stormed Parliament yesterday and threatened more demonstrations this week they say the proposed finance bill would have caused more economic pain for people already struggling to get by more than 20 people were killed in the demonstrations the Espionage trial for American journalist Evan gershovich has begun in Russia The Wall Street Journal reporter guilty gers kovitz is the first US journalist to be arrested in Russia on Espionage charges since the C Cold War if he’s convicted he faces up to 20 years in prison running dry ahead how First Nations are calling for long overdue access to clean drinking [Music] water water will soon be flowing again through a massive feeder main pipe in Alberta’s biggest city but Calgary’s mayor says it will still be days before water services are fully restored the water team is beginning the four-step process of fill flush test and stabilize there are still four important steps that need to be taken to ensure that our water is safe and that it can be returned at regular volumes if everything goes right in the coming days Services could be fully restored by July 1st though calgarians are being asked to keep reducing their water use in nearby First Nations communities people have lived with drinking water advisories for years and still need to use boiled or bottled water Heather urick West takes us to one Community West of Calgary where despite promises and some action progress has been painfully slow the Stony nakota Nations west of Calgary are filled with stunning views of Staggering Beauty the air out here is just so clear um the land the mountains like it just it’s home to me the tap water here though isn’t as clean Taylor Crow spreads his wings says she’s had to rely on bottled water all her life it is a bit stressful um just every day worrying about like my kids having clean water um and then food obviously but I have to like boil the water first the federal government has been working to end long-term drinking water advisories in First Nations communities since 2015 as of June 8th 144 have been lifted with 30 more to go but those advisories don’t capture the full story on the stoning nakota Nations a long-term boiled water advisory was lifted here in 2014 Still Water concerns persist for those like Taylor who rely on SNS or Wells and these nations are not alone for example Six Nations um we have to purchase our water get it pumped in so we don’t fit the boiled water advisory although you cannot drink the water from your well it’s hoped new federal legislation co-developed with First Nations will will apply minimum drinking water standards to all communities but progress on the bill has been incredibly slow after years of consultation the ACT finally was tabled last December it’s not expected to reach the Senate until the end of this year it means for Taylor her lifetime Reliance on laundromats and bottled water is unlikely to end anytime soon yeah it does make me sad Heather urex West Global News Stony nakota Nations Alberta Oka to Ottawa next why paddlers are retracing the Journey of an indigenous Chief my M swampy greed my daddy Europe and I’m different meaning for everyone taking part pretend there’s a fish not everyone who’s about to head out on this trip is an expert in the canoe hence the safety briefing at Oka Park just west of Montreal before this group of 17 paddlers hit the Ottawa River well this trip is is actually going against the current from Oka to Ottawa it’s roughly 154 km they plan to do it in 6 days about 30 km a Newfoundland and Labrador’s commercial cod fishery is partially reopening for the first time since July 1992, when hundreds of coastal communities – that long depended on cod – lost their economic and cultural heart. Eric Sorensen explains why the moratorium is being lifted, what it means for the province and how politics may be at play.

Also, questions are swirling about the future of Canada’s federal Liberal party and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, after the party’s surprising by-election loss in their longtime stronghold riding of Toronto-St. Paul’s on Monday. Mackenzie Gray reports on the public sentiments of support for Trudeau and what polls are saying voters’ thoughts on potential successors to him.

Over in the U.S., millions of Americans are dealing with severe weather in the midwest, where days of torrential rain have caused catastrophic flooding in at least four states. As Jackson Proskow explains, it’s expected to get even worse before it gets better.

Plus, WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange is back home in Australia for the first time since 2010, after the publisher was arrested for releasing hundreds of thousands of classified U.S. documents. As Redmond Shannon reports, Assange is staying quiet about his freedom for now.

Back in Canada, Calgary is expected to lift its water restrictions soon, though nearby First Nations have lived without clean drinking water for years. Heather Yourex-West visits Stoney Nakoda Nations, Alta., where progress has been painfully slow despite promises from the federal government.

And, some paddlers from across Canada have set off from Oka, Que., to Ottawa, on a journey to retrace the steps of an Indigenous hero, Algonquin Grand Chief Constant Pinesi. Phil Carpenter explains what the Pinesi Paddle means to those taking part.

  1. Marc Miller needs to look at homelessness and misery in his own constituency. Life is unbearably expensive for most citizens. But the post-national government doesn't care about it's citizens.

  2. First Nations deserve clean drinking water! It's been too long they have to lug the family's laundry to a facility. Thank you for bringing this to light. Hopefully it will be more of a priority.

  3. Fuc'kin political election tactical move…….sold out our precious Canadian fisheries to global conglomorates…..like all Canadian precious resources…….sold our precious resources…….When will the (government bought and sold out Canadian) Global News report "independent"……."unbiased news" …….shame on Global News……..you have lost all credibility ……..

  4. We have boil water advisories in our nation and our government feels that changing names of streets and demanding all Canadians buy electric vehicles are the best ways to help Indigenous Peoples… Words fail me

  5. Trudeau has done a fantastic job through the pandemic and everything else, standing up to China and standing with our allies; he will be getting my vote again in the next election. Everywhere Conservatism has been tried it has failed spectacularly, it has ruined economies, killed jobs, lowered wages, and increased poverty; on the flip side of that, Liberalism has created jobs, improved wages, strengthened economies, improved the social safety net and given more to citizens, taxes have been fair and problems like climate change have been addressed, education, roads, and healthcare have been fully funded and any problems have been addressed in a mature way with actual solutions that work in the real world, just like how Trudeau is dealing with the housing crisis with a multi year plan to fix the underlying problems. Liberalism around the world and in Canada has consistently reduced deficits and the national debt whenever possible, only going into debt when it is in the peoples interest to do so, like during the pandemic. Conservatives almost always give tax cuts to the richest people and to the largest corporations and expand the deficit and therefore the national debt in order to pay for them, and they always try to privatize healthcare, water and electric utilities, and other government owned infrastructure, selling whole railways that were built with your tax dollars for 10 cents on the dollar to their already incredibly wealthy donors, friends, and family members in order to steal from average Canadians. That is why it makes sense to vote consistently for Liberal parties, in Canada that's either the NDP or the Liberal party, they're both "liberal" parties, of course the Liberals actually know how to govern and have been doing it quite well, so that's why my vote will be for Trudeau.

  6. “Always treat others as you would like them to treat you.” And “love your neighbour as yourself.” That is the Law and the Prophets of God. He is our true Father in heaven and on earth.

So never worship and pray in the way of the many false prophets who lead all religions.

“But when you pray, go into a room by yourself, and shut the door. Pray to your Father who is there in the secret place; and your Father who sees what is secret will reward you openly.

In your prayers do not go babbling on like the heathen, who imagine that the more they say the more likely they are to be heard. Do not imitate them. Your Father knows what your needs are before you ask him.

This is how you should pray:

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,

Your kingdom come; your will be done, on earth as in heaven,

Give us today our daily bread,

Forgive us the wrong we have done, as we have forgiven those who have wronged us.

And do not bring us to the test, but save us from the evil one.

For yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, for ever.

    Amen.

For if you forgive others the wrongs they have done, your heavenly Father will also forgive you; but if you do not forgive others, then the wrongs you have done will not be forgiven by your Father.” – (The Prophet and Messiah Jesus of Nazareth at Matthew 6: 6-15) –

“Pass no judgement, and you will not be judged. For as you judge others, so you will yourselves be judged, and whatever measure you deal out to others will be dealt back to you.” – (at Matthew 7: 1-2) –

“Truly I tell you, if anyone obeys my teaching he shall never know what it is to die.” – (at John 8: 51) –

“Always treat others as you would like them to treat you: that is the Law and the Prophets.

Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life and only a few find it.” – (Matthew 7: 12-14) –

“I am the gate; anyone who comes into the fold through me shall be safe. He shall go in and out and shall find pasturage.

The thief comes only to steal, to kill, to destroy; I have come that men may have life, and may have it in all its fullness.” – (John 10: 9-10) –

“Beware of false prophets, men who come to you dressed up as sheep while underneath they are savage wolves. You will recognize them by the fruits they bear.” – (Matthew 7: 15-16) –

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.” – (Matthew 7: 21) –

“I am the resurrection and I am life. If a man has faith in me, even though he dies, he shall come to life; and no one who is alive and has faith shall ever die.” – (John 11: 25-26) –

“I have not come to judge the world, but to save the world” – (John 12: 47) –

“Whoever then will acknowledge me before men, I will acknowledge him before my Father in heaven; and whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven.” – (Matthew 10: 32-34) –

“I am the way; I am the truth and I am life; no one comes to the Father except by me. If you knew me you would know my Father too.” – (John 14: 6-7) –

“An expert in the law, [a leading religious Pharisee] tested him with this question: ‘Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?’ He answered, ‘Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind. That is the greatest commandment. It comes first. The second is like it: Love your neighbour as yourself. Everything in the Law and the Prophets hangs on these two commandments.’” – (Matthew 22: 35-40) –

“There is no greater love than this, that a man should lay down his life for his friends.” – (John 15: 13) –

“Do not call any man on earth ‘father’ ; for you have one Father and he is in heaven. Nor must you be called ‘teacher’ ; you have one Teacher, the Messiah.’” – (Matthew 23: 9-10) –

“Take care that no one misleads you: For many will come claiming my name…” – (Matthew 24: 4) –

“Many false prophets will arise, and will mislead many; and as lawlessness spreads, men’s love for one another will grow cold. But the man who holds out to the end will be saved. ” – (Matthew 24: 11-13) –

“Teach them to observe all that I have commanded you. And be assured, I am with you always, to the end of time.” – (Matthew 28: 20) –

Yours, in true Spirit and in our one given prayer, 2gointruth, on Thursday the 27th of June 2024: – (Please read Matthew 5: 14-16) – Where every minute (of both day and night) can be a new beginning for any one of us. Let it always be you. Pray to God often, as prescribed above, before it is too late.

  7. Canada fish … right every other country has been stealing our fish every day and Canada has done nothing about it. Its not going to be funny out their .. you will not catch much because our country does not protect our waters.

  8. If you're a Canadian homeowner and Trudeau says he'll keep your home value high, you'll re-elect him in the next election. Canadians don't care about fellow Canadians. They only care about themselves.
