Climate protesters were detained after disrupting the PGA Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands in Cromwell, Connecticut, on Sunday, June 23, as Scottie Scheffler was playing at the 18th hole.
Footage from Extinction Rebellion shows protesters running onto the course with smoke bombs and t-shirts reading “No golf on a dead planet,” before getting tackled and escorted out by security.
According to reports, the demonstrators sprayed powder on the grass as players prepared for the final hole of regulation.
In a press release, Extinction Rebellion confirmed its demonstrators had taken this action to demand governments and corporations properly address “the climate catastrophe occurring before our very eyes.”
“This is so much more grave than people recognize. If we don’t act now, we won’t be able to play golf in the future, and that’s the least of it,” said Jeff Marsar, one of the activists who disrupted the event.
“It’s not a matter of prevention; it’s too late for that. We are struggling to reduce the harm and put out the fires.”
Scottie Scheffler went on to win the championship, becoming the first player since Arnold Palmer in 1962 to record six PGA TOUR wins before July, Travelers Championship said.
