[Music] this spring there’s probably about 300 Vancouver Island marmots waking up from hibernation and then we’ll have these another 60 joining them through this year we’re still talking about a critically endangered species the most endangered mammal in Canada really you know to put that in perspective there’s several thousand giant pandas there’s uh 6 to 800 mountain gorillas so definitely still a critically endangered species mine was pretty loud his name was Lamar um he was squeaking a lot and like I could kind of feel him moving around in the cave behind me [Music]
Six critically endangered Vancouver Island Marmots that were bred in captivity have been released into the wild on the British Columbia island. The Marmot Recovery Foundation says 60 marmots will be released this year as efforts continue to bring the endemic species back from the brink of extinction.
