LEVY: Richard Bilkszto remembered as “a gifted educator”

“In memory of a beloved Toronto principal who tragically took his own life, a ceremony was recently held in Toronto to honour his dedication to free expression and academic excellence.

The late Richard Bilkszto, a prominent Toronto school principal for many years, was remembered for his commitment to values that he believed in during his lifetime. Unfortunately, Bilkszto faced mental distress after being singled out and harassed during an “equity session” for expressing the belief that Canada might be less racist than the United States.

Friends of Richard Bilkszto organized an award ceremony and scholarship program to celebrate educators who embody the values Bilkszto stood for. The event gathered a crowd of around 60 people who listened to speeches highlighting the importance of academic freedom and merit-based education while acknowledging Bilkszto’s legacy.

Remembering Richard Bilkszto:

Former Toronto mayoral candidate Anthony Furey shared his experience with Bilkszto, emphasizing the late principal’s dedication to academic excellence and belief in the potential of all students to achieve great things.

Toronto District School Board trustee Weidong Pei, described Bilkszto as his “best friend,” commended him for embodying values like practice, persistence, and perseverance, which had a lasting impact on students.

Challenges and Recognition:

Among those recognized at the event was Carolyn Burjoski, a retired school teacher who faced backlash for raising concerns about inappropriate books in school libraries. Waterloo school trustee Mike Ramsay was also recognized for his support of Burjoski when she was silenced during a board meeting.

Elizabeth Haas-Barota, another recipient of the Richard Bilkszto Award, was recognized for her dedication to merit-based education and student achievement in a challenging environment.

A compelling conclusion:

The legacy of Richard Bilkszto serves as a reminder of the importance of supporting educators who uphold values of free expression, academic excellence, and merit-based education. The recognition of individuals like Burjoski, Ramsay, and Haas-Barota highlights the ongoing challenges faced by educators in advocating for their beliefs and the need for a supportive community in times of adversity.

As we reflect on the impact of Richard Bilkszto’s life and tragic death, it is imperative to continue his mission of promoting a culture of inclusivity, respect, and unity within the education system. Let his memory inspire us to stand up for what we believe in and support those who courageously advocate for the values of academic freedom and merit-based education.”
