“Amazon Makes a Green Shift: Swapping Plastic for Recycled Paper Packaging”

In a bold move towards environmental sustainability, Amazon is ditching plastic air pillows for recycled paper packaging in North America. This switch not only benefits the planet but also improves the overall packaging experience for customers.

### A Major Plastic Reduction Effort

Amazon announced that it has already replaced 95% of plastic air pillows with paper filler in North America, with plans to completely eliminate plastic by the end of the year. This translates to almost 15 billion plastic air pillows being removed annually from Amazon’s packaging.

### A Step in the Right Direction

While environmental groups like Oceana commend Amazon for taking this significant step towards reducing plastic waste, there is still more that can be done. Matt Littlejohn of Oceana emphasizes the importance of Amazon fulfilling its commitment to transition away from plastic in all of its North America fulfillment centers. Moving towards reusable packaging and reducing single-use packaging worldwide are also crucial steps for the e-commerce giant.

### Towards a Greener Future

Through testing and experimentation, Amazon found that paper filler offers equal or better protection during shipping compared to plastic air pillows. Employees at Amazon fulfillment centers are also finding the transition to paper filler more efficient and user-friendly. Additionally, Amazon is actively working on reducing waste by shipping items without additional packaging whenever possible.

As Amazon continues to implement sustainable practices like using AI-powered robots for recycling and partnering with the U.S. Department of Energy on recycling programs, it is clear that the company is committed to creating a greener future for all. This shift towards recycled paper packaging not only benefits the environment but sets a positive example for other businesses to follow suit. Amazon’s efforts serve as a reminder that every small change can make a big difference in the fight against plastic pollution.”
