it’s not the heat it’s the humidity we’ve all heard it but can we measure it that’s where the humidex comes in the humidex is a measure combining temperature and humidity levels to indicate how hot it feels to the human body higher humidity makes it harder for sweat to evaporate from our skin which is our natural cooling mechanism sweat evaporation stops almost entirely at a humidity level of near 90% as a result a temperature of 30° C with high humid can make it feel like an equivalent temperature of 40 or more Environment Canada cautions that a humidex rating of over 40 can cause great discomfort and exertion should be avoided High humidex values can strain the body leading to health risks like heat cramps and heat rash heat exhaustion and heat stroke particularly for vulnerable groups such as the elderly children and those with pre-existing medical conditions while individual tolerances do Vary Understanding the humidex can help you gauge the impact of hot and humid weather on your body a useful measure to have when planning on how to stay safe and as comfortable as possible during high heat events

CTV Atlantic meteorologist Kalin Mitchell explains what the humidex is and why it matters.
