Calgary water main break: New pipe has arrived from San Diego, Mayor Gondek says

now since the start of this Water Crisis 2 weeks ago you have managed to save over 600 Olympic swimming pool uh size of water usage so 600 olympic size swimming pools that’s what you’ve saved in terms of water and that is absolutely a gold medal effort and I want to thank all of you for what you’ve been doing I’m happy to report as well that the two pieces of pipe that we’ve been waiting on from San Diego arrived last night there are people that are asking why we sourced pipe from San Diego when we could have found it right here in our backyard please know that we focused on local options first understanding that being able to ship something in from a neighboring Community would be a much quicker and much better option the issue is the size of this pipe this is not generally the size of pipe that’s used in oil and gas operations generally if this type of a part is available it’s because an organization that provides water to Residents is the one that has it on hand and that’s why the San Diego County Water Authority has been has been such an important partner for us while we would have welcomed the opportunity to custom make this pipe right here at home it would have taken a lot of time and in the interest of getting your water turned on as quickly as possible we chose the option that would make repairs much faster we are using local talent to sand bait to sand blast and to coat the pipe and we are all using local experts when it comes comes to contractors on the work sites as well as the trades who are helping with so much of the work

Calgary Mayor Jyoti Gondek said Wednesday that a pipe sourced from San Diego, Calif., has arrived after additional points of failure were identified following a catastrophic water main break on June 5, which led to the city’s water supply crisis.

Gondek also addressed concerns that the pipe had come from the U.S. rather than being procured locally, saying that it would not have allowed the city to complete the repairs as quickly.

“While we would have welcomed the opportunity to custom make this pipe right here at home, it would have taken a lot of time,” she said.
Since the feeder main break was reported, Gondek says, Calgarians have saved the equivalent of more than 600 Olympic-sized swimming pools of water.

  1. So you are saying the city works yard is not properly funded and or equipped to handle the chosen infrastructure. And somehow our neighbors will solve our problems for 60 cents to their dollar. Just making sure we are clear on the facts before the election is called.

  2. Most people in Calgary are doing their part to get through this . Too bad they issued warnings to idiots who were watering their lawns, filling pools, washing their driveways and had backyard fires. Should be fined right away, pretending they did not know what was going on.

  3. Calgary cannot handle a water main break? Alarming. Supply of replacement pipes, skilled labour to put them in, and do it promptly, not for weeks. How complicated is a pipe replacement with all the modern machinery and engineering available to Calgary?

  4. Why did the city have to look outside the country for a pipe section? Why did the city not have a yard full of replacement pipe sections?

Alberta is full of the best welders in Canada…no?

I know a place in Edmonton that could have fabricated that pipe.

Who is making the money off this water dilemma? It’s definitely not the people of Calgary…well maybe a few of them, not the majority.
