Crowds from all across the U.K. gathered in London on Saturday for not only the annual birthday celebration of the monarch – the Trooping the Colour parade – but for the Princess of Wales, Kate Middleton’s, first public appearance since her cancer diagnosis earlier this year.

After weeks of speculation from fans of the Royal Family regarding Kate’s attendance of King Charles’ birthday event, the 42-year-old princess confirmed she would be there in a public statement on Friday, which also addressed her ongoing health battle.

Kate said while she is “not out of the woods,” that she is making good progress as she undergoes preventative chemotherapy. She added that she had been “blown away” by the thousands of kind messages from across the globe that have been shared since her cancer announcement in March.

“When Kate knows the time is ready to come more into the public, that’s what we’re waiting for,” said John Loughrey, a spectator at Trooping the Colour, on Saturday. “Kate’s come to see us all and she’s thanked us all and we thank you too Kate and we love you very much,” he added.

Kate accompanied her three children, princes George and Louis and Princess Charlotte, in a carriage and could later be seen watching the annual event from a balcony at Buckingham Palace. While the princess said she was hoping to take part in other events this year, aides cautioned that Saturday did not mark a return to a full schedule of work.

  1. Pl note HUGELY important fact – PRINCESS CATHERINE IS THE COLONEL OF THE IRISH GUARDS! SHE WAS THERE TO TAKE THEIR SALUTE! Her role as Colonel was why she made such an effort to be there. She stood up at the window whenever they passed + saluted them at the end. She was just as much there for them as William was for the Welsh Guards, or Edward for the Scottish Guards or Princess Ann for whatever her regiment is.
