Why concert tickets in Canada are so expensive

it costs this much for one of the cheapest tickets to Taylor Swift’s AOS tour in Toronto in Stockholm fans paid this much last month some swifties in Canada are booking flights to Europe but why can’t we get cheaper ticket prices here demand and pricing varies between countries but music industry experts say the gap between Canada and European countries mainly comes down to two reasons Europe has strict resale and competition laws that keep prices lower we don’t we also have Ticket Master a massive company that controls a bulk of ticket sales in Canada and the US let’s break down Europe’s situation first some European countries like these have baned the resale of tickets for profit meaning you have to sell the tickets for what you bought them ticket resale for profit is generally viewed by most consumers as something parasitic in Canada resellers can mark up ticket prices as high as they want in this year’s federal budget Canada promised to crack down on ticket reseller practices but it gave few details or timelines and what about Ticket Master many politicians and music industry experts in the US and Canada blame Ticket Master and its owner Live Nation for the riseing ticket prices when it comes to concerts artists set their prices but Ticket Master adds extra fees in some cases those fees inflated ticket prices by up to 65% the US Department of Justice is now suing Live Nation the doj says the company has monopolized the live music industry and it wants Ticket Master and Live Nation to split up Live Nation says the lawsuit won’t reduce ticket prices or service fees this expert disagrees as long as they one firm Live Nation has the incentive to work with the ticketing service to raise the price of ticketing services and to keep other ticketing Services out Fox warrs the US justice system moves slowly if the lawsuit goes through it will be years before it concert goers see any changes in ticket prices what about Canada the competition Bureau here said they’re aware of the US lawsuit and that they work closely with their counterparts but they wouldn’t say whether they’re doing their own investigation we also asked the federal industry Minister whether Canada will file a similar lawsuit he said he’d be looking into it Canadian authorities might very well want to be supporting what the US authorities are doing and try to create competition

Canadian Swifties say they’re flying to Europe to see the singer’s Eras Tour because of cheaper ticket prices. CBC’s María José Burgos breaks down why concert tickets are so expensive in Canada and what needs to change for prices to fall.
