Touring La Fontaine Tunnel’s delayed construction site

18

[Music] we’re here at the Louis laon 10 tunnel to get a better understanding why construction will be partially delayed until 20127 two major reason the first one is the ventilation tower that were more damaged than expected and secondly some late in the execution of the work in the South tube so in the South tube where we are actually there was a work stoppage unfortunately two weeks for uh monoxide carbon problem and last year uh two week stoppage for some molding problem and the scarcity of the uh professional is sometimes an issue and we had that machine over there that has broken sometimes and it’s a very very special machine just done for this job transport Quebec says this project is a massive undertaking remember that construction hasn’t been done here in 60 years including these four ventilation Towers behind me that also need to be repaired the exact problem with these ventilation Towers is the the real condition of the concrete panels and the structure which are let’s say not working at they should be it’s a Tunnel underwater and uh let’s say the concrete in this tunnel very damage and everywhere damage so it’s hard work to demolish this concrete to prepare the surface is very hard work a partial opening in both directions is slated for fall 2026 and a full reopening in 2027 [Music]

We go behind the scenes at Montreal’s Louis-Hippolyte-La Fontaine Tunnel, which connects the city to the South Shore suburbs. The tunnel has been under repair since 2019 and delays and complications have pushed back the original November 2025 completion date by at least a year.
