French president Emanuel macron is defending his decision to call a snap election after his party’s crushing defeat in the European parliamentary vote in his first public address since the surprise move he said he couldn’t ignore France’s new political reality he urged all politicians to regroup and defeat the far right in upcoming elections he said he would not resign if his party loses and France is suspending controversial voting reforms in New Caledonia the plan changes triggered deadly civil unrest and at least nine people were killed the reforms would have extended the right to vote to residents who have lived in the territory for at least 10 years

French President Emmanuel Macron on Wednesday defended his decision to call a snap election after his party’s crushing defeat in the European Parliamentary vote, adding that he would not resign if his camp does not win.

“I want to nip that in the bud, (the chance of that happening) never existed,” he said. “It’s absurd. I believe in the strengths of our institutions.”

In what amounted to a campaign speech, Macron acknowledged making mistakes and said people had expressed their indignation but felt they were not being heard.

Macron also defended his decision to suspend electoral reform in New Caledonia after the planned changes triggered deadly civil unrest, resulting in the deaths of at least nine people.
