the pwl holding its second ever entry draft with the number one overall pick in the 2024 pwhl draft New York selects Sarah filer Billy Jean King who’s been of course integral to the lead’s early stages and development she had the honor of announcing the first pick and it is Canadian Olympic gold medalist Sarah filer drafted by New York she was far from the only Canadian star selected last night let’s take you to New Brunswick Carissa Donan has been covering the pwl for CBC Sports all through the inaugural season well even before when we were leading up to it Karissa so great to talk to you again from frederickton on all of this tell us more about the first overall pick and some of the other talent that was H selected last night yeah it was great to talk to you Heather and you know Sarah filer she’s really a generational Talent she sees the ice so well and she’s going to bring a lot of offense to New York which is a team that scored the second fewest goals in the pwl uh last season uh but off the ice I really think she’s going to be one of the faces of this league in the years to come I mean if we look at her on Team Canada she’s already such an integral part of that team as you mentioned she’s got an Olympic gold medal to her name she’s got three World Championships on her resume she’s only 24 years old actually just celebrated her 24th birthday on Sunday talk about a great birthday week um and here’s what she had to say about topping it off with being the first overall pick I think just a ton of skill and creativity and want to contribute offensively and um it’s going to be a dream comeu just to play at that level and officially be a pro hockey player so Sarah filer obviously you know the biggest Canadian name on the board but there were lots of other uh talented players who went last night Heather and lots of players who went to the Canadian teams they’ got some Talent as well Danielle sakne from Edmonton went to Ottawa at overall and she’s a player who um has really good size she kind of plays a a playmaking power forward type of game and she’s going to be able to come in and contribute right away to that team Montreal got a talented American defender in Caleb Barnes she won an Olympic gold medal when she was just 19 years old with Team USA and then in Toronto they got a a power forward in Julia Gosling so she’s someone who reminds you a lot when you watch her play of Natalie Spooner which is definitely um good news for Toronto fans and you can catch up on all of all of what happened last night at the draft on our CBC sports hockey North show which is going up on our website later this afternoon Heather mentioning Natalie Spooner hopefully she’s back to full form after that injury and the surgery and uh we’ll be seeing her hopefully in season two so much excitement around the first season of the pwl with the draft this is the kickoff really to season two so what do we expect there in in the near future Karissa well Heather looking you know forward to the growth of the league one of the goals of this league was to attract the best talent from all over the world so not just the best Canadian or the best American players but internationally as well and we certainly saw that last night in the draft we saw players from uh seven different countries selected a number of players from the Swedish Women’s Hockey League selected so that’s really good news for the growth of the league but also for the growth of international women’s hockey as well I mean we’ve long seen Canada USA be a Powerhouse and this is going to help um other countries you know develop and and catch up to that and then you know looking forward to um next season and Heather we’ve got free agency coming up later this month we’re going to see team names and logos finally revealed in August and then we expect the season to start uh later this year Carissa thanks for this conversation and so many we’ll look forward to uh moving into season two Carissa Donan with CBC Sports and you can read more of what she’s been reporting on online P pwhl draft uh her piece up online and you heard her say she’ll be on hockey North with Rob piso a little bit later today so you can watch that on our website this afternoon as well

Sarah Fillier, an Olympic gold medallist and three-time world champion with Team Canada, was selected first overall by New York in the 2024 PWHL entry draft.
