24

good evening thanks for joining us new audio between the pilot and the control tower has emerged from the float plane Collision in Cole Harbor on the weekend investigators will be analyzing new video of the crash obtained by CTV News somehow all passengers aboard the harbor Air flight survived after it crashed into a boat on takeoff now the focus will be on how it happened and how to prevent it from happening again let’s join our singen Alexander who is live in Cole Harbor tonight and sing the area behind you is a focus of the investigation and it is called area Alpha you can probably see a hope M Jung that the SE plane about to take off right now really that’s this area here where the plane is at the tip of Stanley Park to a boy in the distance is the area and boats are supposed to avoid this area but for some reason something didn’t go right on Saturday the moment of impact was likely witnessed by dozens of people the plane’s floats are snapped the roof from The Vessel gone he was trying to take off but hit the boat he says in French this is a very busy Port an audio from the control tower suggests the pleasurecraft had been spotted 59 ready for Northwest if you have enough time 5209 ction for the westbound Northern alha take off Northwest at your discretion it’s not clear whether the pilot heard the warning but thousands of flights have taken off and touchdown safely in Cole Harbor most of them from what’s known as area Alpha an area boats are told to avoid if they must Transit within that area they should be really aware of the safe boarding tips in other words vessels are allowed to cross but should think of it like a busy highway look left look right and then out and be sure nothing is coming within the busy Waters of a port if you’re encountering deep sea vessels or sea planes it’s important to remember that those Port users have limited visibility and can’t always see you clearly oh my God the plane’s thinking I think they’ve got everybody El what’s remarkable in all of this was the response within minutes police fire the port authority and small boats surrounded the scene and offered assistance including the sea bus I saw a plane floundering it looked looked like it was partially in the water aware there are usually passengers on float planes Captain April Larson alerted the crew the passengers and diverted the ship I felt the boat come to a really slow Halt and I was like what’s going on so what’s remarkable about these plane accidents is they start to sink so quickly and I was seeing the plane sink right before our eyes it was it really a world class response the people on the boat were seriously hurt but will survive everyone on the the plane got out safely yeah so remember boats are allowed to go in the area but right now as you can see it would not be a good idea so the question is after Saturday should they make this off limits at all times should they put up barriers should there be fines that’s all things they’ll be looking into mij yeah some good questions there thank you singen

  1. The safest thing for the boat is to maintain course and maintain speed, which is exactly what they did. The pilot is fully to blame, but the float plane airline company is going to blame the boat captain.

  2. Although I agree the boat captain seems likely inept, at the end of the day, the float plane take-off should have been delayed if there was any risk of collision, and rather, perhaps the boat is reported and the police issue a ticket.

Stuff can happen, the boat could be out of control, the captain could be having a heart attack.. who the heck knows, we can't just assume that the path is always going to be clear and plow through.

  3. IIll tell you why, its because boats are not treating that zone as an airplane sea port runway zone. Its harder to takeoff and avoid collision with poor visibility than in a boat that can cut the throttle because you can clearly see all around you and directly in front of you. What the hell the boat going straight for anyways? Boats dont need to go straight..

  4. The International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea 1972 also known as Collision Regulations (COLREGs) are published by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) and set out, among other things, the "rules of the road" or navigation rules to be followed by ships and other vessels at sea to prevent collisions between two or more vessels.

  5. this report has misinformation in it. boats are allowed to transit this area… there are marinas and a fuel dock in this area.. and nothing from transport Canada on restrictions on the chart for this area… the plane hit the boat on its port side.. that means the boat had right of way… the plane had been warned of the boat… its not the boats fault… but he could have and should have avoided the collision but in the end… the plane was at fault… and you can check the the chart… it is what stands up in court.. there is no exclusion zone there… I went through it twice on Sat… its a very busy place… why they do not have take off and landing zones like Victoria and Nanaimo is all on Transport Canada… they need to accept some blame for this. The boat was the stand on vessel.. the plane was the give way vessel.. and caused the collision.

  6. How hopelessly Vancouver/west coast. Two totally oblivious yoga-doers crashing into one another on a bright day, calm water, lots of room and having no possible excuse for their obliviousness.

They must have been munching on granola bars and inhaling copious amounts of marijuana between trading stocks for tech companies that enslave children in third world countries and congratulating themselves on the beauty of the local scenery they had no part in creating.

Oh, Vancouver. Wake the hell up. ????

  7. It looks like the pilot either can't see forward while taking off or was looking at the instruments instead. The control tower mentioned the boat casually, as if expecting the pilot to see it.
