Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Canada’s Deputy Prime Minister, Chrystia Freeland, was asked why the federal government isn’t releasing the names of the politicians in the National Security and Intelligence Committee of Parliamentarians’ (NSICOP) report involved in knowingly engaging with hostile nations in the foreign interference of the federal government.
Freeland deflected the question, but said regardless of the interference, she believes Canadians still have confidence in our democracy.
“This work is a really important part of strengthening our democracy. And this is just one of many steps we’ve taken already in terms of strengthening our rules against foreign interference and the authorities. We have to fight it,” Freeland said.
She said the report’s findings are “concerning,” but she trusts that law enforcement will do its job.
