Canada’s Governor General on mission to combat hateful online comments by fostering civility

35

From public figures to the average person, anyone can be a target when it comes to hateful online comments. That includes Canada’s Governor General Mary Simon, who has made it a mission to help foster more civility — and says a lack of it has affected her personally.

In February 2023, the Governor General’s office disabled comments on her social media platforms because of the abusive, misogynistic and racist engagements — including violent threats — her website states.

Citing a recent conference she convened, Simon proposed several solutions, which included mentoring other people, more mental health support and being an ally.

Global’s Nathaniel Dove has more in this exclusive interview.

  1. This lady is our governor general? She looks like she’s going to fall asleep in this interview. Seriously on-line hate? Get a life, so what if some troll loser says something negative about you or your community. Since when did we all become snow flakes. I definitely don’t need this woman protecting me from online content.

  5. Traditional leaders, unfamiliar with the intricacies of the internet, often attempt to regulate it based on their understanding of television, a medium they are more accustomed to. However, the internet operates differently, with a multitude of diverse voices and perspectives that cannot be easily controlled. It is essential for these leaders to either educate themselves about the internet's true nature or step aside, allowing younger, more tech-savvy individuals to guide the digital landscape.

  6. Yeah, the corrupt GG doesn't like being exposed for all her spending on the tax payers dime. Nothing more than another Trudeau woke hire Grifter!
