Montreal’s Mindstrong passes $10-million milestone in fundraising for mental health - Montreal

“Mindstrong: Montreal’s Mental Health Fundraiser Hits $10 Million Milestone”

In its ninth year, a remarkable mental health fundraiser in Montreal has achieved a significant milestone. The Mindstrong fitness fundraiser, which took place last Sunday, has now exceeded $10 million in total fundraising since its inception in 2015. This event brings together hundreds of individuals annually, uniting in a collective effort to support mental health initiatives.

**A Community United in Purpose**

Deanna Rabinovitz, a dedicated participant who has been involved in every Mindstrong event, emphasized the widespread impact of mental illness, stating, “Mental illness really affects everyone. If it’s not you, it’s your family or someone else you know.” The sense of community at Mindstrong is palpable as participants engage in various fitness activities like Pilates and yoga at the Midtown Sanctuaire to raise funds for mental health care at the Jewish General Hospital.

**A Testament to Progress and Compassion**

Liz Wiener, the chair of Mindstrong 2024 and co-president of the Jewish General Hospital Auxiliary, expressed pride in the event’s record-breaking turnout, remarking, “We’re really excited that the event came together, and to see so many people out here exercising, it just it’s amazing.” Over the years, the collective efforts of Mindstrong have resulted in a total fundraising amount of $10 million, enabling crucial improvements in mental health care infrastructure, equipment, and research at the hospital.

Dr. Karl Looper, the chief of psychiatry at the Jewish General Hospital, highlighted one of the significant projects funded by Mindstrong, stating, “The biggest project that we were able to realize with this funding is a complete renovation of our in-patient unit. It’s now a state-of-the-art facility.”

**Beyond Fundraising: Breaking Stigma and Fostering Connection**

Mindstrong transcends its monetary achievements by promoting mental health awareness and combating stigma. Participants not only raise funds but also strive to show solidarity and support for those grappling with mental health issues. Liz Wiener emphasized the importance of compassion and empathy, stating, “The fact that people are here celebrating something that used to be so stigmatized, that nobody wanted their names or faces associated with it, is huge.”

The positive impact of exercise on mental well-being cannot be understated. Dr. Hooper explained, “When you exercise, you feel better, and it stimulates endorphins. It’s usually even better if it’s with other people. There’s a social component here and it just really feels fantastic.”

**Looking Towards a Brighter Future**

As Mindstrong gears up for its 10th anniversary next year, the focus remains on fostering community support and raising awareness for mental health. The goal is to bring even more individuals together and generate a greater impact than ever before.

In conclusion, Mindstrong’s journey exemplifies the transformative power of collective action in addressing mental health challenges. It serves as a testament to the resilience, compassion, and unity that can be fostered when communities come together for a common cause. As we celebrate this milestone, let us continue to support and advocate for mental health initiatives, striving for a future where individuals facing mental health issues can find solace, understanding, and hope.”
