“Canada Steps Up for Haiti: New Temporary Measures Announced by Minister of Immigration
In a move to assist individuals impacted by the crises in Haiti, Minister of Immigration, Citizenship and Refugees Marc Miller announced new temporary measures on May 23rd. These measures aim to provide support to Haitians in Canada with valid temporary resident status, as well as family members of Canadian citizens or permanent residents.
Who is eligible to apply under this new temporary policy?
The eligibility criteria for this new stream include Haitian nationals with valid temporary resident status in Canada, family members of Canadian citizens and permanent residents who meet specific requirements, and permanent residents of Canada subject to a waiting period for provincial or territorial health coverage. Additionally, Haitian nationals outside of Canada with existing permanent residence applications may also be eligible under certain conditions.
Part of a wider strategy
This recent temporary policy forms part of a broader strategy implemented by the Government of Canada to address the humanitarian situation in Haiti. Minister Marc Miller emphasized the government’s commitment to the well-being of individuals in Haiti, stating that these measures will provide a safe environment for Haitian nationals to work and study.
The government’s efforts also include assisted departures from Haiti at the start of the crises, as well as a dedicated humanitarian pathway for foreign nationals from Colombia, Venezuela, and Haiti to apply for permanent residence on a priority basis. Through these initiatives, IRCC aims to welcome 11,000 foreign nationals to Canada.
Conclusion: A Helping Hand in Turbulent Times
As Canada extends a helping hand to those affected by the crises in Haiti, the new temporary measures represent a step towards providing support and stability to Haitian nationals in Canada. By offering pathways to work, study, and extension of status, the government demonstrates a commitment to humanitarian efforts and upholding the values of compassion and solidarity.
In challenging times, it is heartening to see nations come together to support those in need. As we reflect on the impact of these measures, let us also consider how we can contribute to creating a more inclusive and supportive global community.”
