At least four people have died and 16 others injured following the collapse of a building in Mallorca, Spain on Thursday evening.
Emergency services quickly responded to the scene. As of Friday, eight victims remain in the hospital. Officials confirmed the fatalities as two German tourists, a Spanish server and a Senegalese man.
Palma De Mallorca Fire Chief Eder Garcia revealed the four were found dead after the terrace of the outdated Medusa Beach Club, a two-story beach side restaurant, collapsed while dozens of others were trapped. The result of the collapse? Likely “excess weight,” Chief Garcia said.
In response to the tragedy, Mallorca’s mayor, Jaime Martinez, declared three days of mourning on Friday, to allow for time “of being with the injured and family of the deceased.”
