Macron pauses New Caledonia voting reform amid unrest


French President Emmanuel Macron says he will not force through controversial electoral reforms that sparked deadly riots in New Caledonia.

Critics say the planned changes would have further marginalized Indigenous Kanak people, which make up roughly 40 per cent of the French territory’s population.

As Mike Armstrong explains, Macron vowed to pause the reform during a surprise visit to New Caledonia, as he tries to restore calm to a region overwhelmed by unrest.
