Is pandemic drunk driving imperative helping some Ontario drivers avoid a criminal record?

During the height of the pandemic, as COVID-19 restrictions created backlogs in the Ontario court system, the Ford government issued a new directive aimed at relieving the caseload. Prosecutors could downgrade drunk driving charges, and instead offer a plea deal to careless driving.

Sparing the driver a criminal record while diverting the case away from the overloaded courts, the plea bargain could only be used in cases with non-aggravating factors.

As the Ontario government is cracking down on impaired drivers with new license suspension measures, it appears the government directive issued during the pandemic may still be helping some people avoid a criminal record.
