Rare Ojibwe spirit horse birth sparks excitement at Canadian farm

52

An Ottawa farm is celebrating a rare event: a second foal has been born at the M?dahòkì Farm, expanding the farm’s herd of rare Ojibwe spirit horses.

Most horse breeds register tens of thousands or even a hundred thousand new births a year, but the Ojibwe Horse Society gets excited if there are a dozen foals born in a year.

It’s estimated fewer than 200 of the ponies exist across the world today, following a dramatic decline in the 1970s.

Abigail Bimman has more about these special animals.

  1. In the states we have them in the wild of Montana. They get harassed by the BLM and are rounded up as "pests."I worked with a rescue herder eight years. They're called Mustangs here. Colonizer name. Wade for bringing them back to Canada it's important.

  3. Didnt the spaniards being the first horses over, looking at that horese blood line it comes originally from Europe. So in a way they are praising our king . God save the king ?.

  4. Hadn't even heard of this breed of horse and their near-extinction from colonial tomfoolery – certainly easy to understand what indigenous people might relate to there. Hopefully we're able to see a full recovery in time.
