“I just love pro wrestling”: The divine nature of Canada’s independent scene

While a devout group gathering regularly during evenings at a church in Cambridge, Ont. might not seem to be out of the ordinary, this group comes together to worship an unexpected idol… professional wrestling.

Bringing together an unlikely roster of characters, fans and performers alike get together to celebrate the dramatic battles of up and coming stars such as Rainbow Brite wrestler Laurel CassieD or relatable Tyler Thomas.

Some grapplers who entered the ring that night are working to fulfill a childhood dream while others are trying to make it to the big leagues or travel to places like Mexico or Japan. Others are just enjoying the community they have found.

“I just love pro wrestling with every fibre of my being. I want to help as many people as I possibly can,” coach and Cross Body Pro Wrestling Academy (CBPW) founder (Big) Ben Ortmanns said. “It’s really only gotten – depending on how you look at it – worse or better. But for me, it’s been one of those things that has been a genuine, legitimate life saver.”
