India Lok Sabha election: Modi seeks 3rd term amid challenge from Rahul Gandhi

34

On Friday, millions of Indians have begun voting in one of the most consequential elections in India’s history.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is seeking a historic third term in office, and is facing stiff competition from Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Indian opposition party, Congress.

The Congress has formed a coalition with several regional parties to build a united opposition and has been campaigning against unemployment, farmers’ distress, and corruption in the government. Modi’s Bhartiya Janta Party (BJP), on the other hand, is accused of promoting a Hindu nationalist agenda and dividing the country along religious lines.

If Modi wins, he’ll be only the second Indian leader to retain power for a third term, after Jawaharlal Nehru, the country’s first prime minister.

The elections will continue till June 1st, and nearly 1 billion voters will elect 543 members to the lower house of Parliament for five years. The results will be announced on June 4th.
