Bell CEO grilled by MPs over sweeping job cuts: “Do you think this is a joke?”

53

Bell Canada Enterprises Inc. CEO Mirko Bibic testified before the House of Commons heritage committee on Thursday, defending his company’s largest layoffs in decades.

It dealt a major blow to newsrooms across the country, as well as the loss of multiple radio stations and television newscasts.

“Do you think this is a joke? Do you enjoy wasting my time?” Conservative MP Rachel Thomas asked during the hearing.

Eric Sorensen looks at the combative exchanges, the accusations of greed and why one expert says the job cuts signal a need for innovation in Canadian journalism.

  1. $40 Billion company getting 100s of Millions in Government subsidies? Hey. How about 100s of Millions for struggling Canadians who can’t afford a decent place to live instead of giving it to Billion dollar oligopolies?

  2. Ramadan is more a cycle cleansing ceremony than a religious event. It is derived from a womans monthly / lunar menstral blood cycle. Its an old testament tradition of cleansing. Its also addressed in the New Testament when the woman with the issue of blood is healed. Its quite remarkable actually

  3. Right…got it. If Canadians want Canadian news, they have to pay Bell execs more money.
It's about time for these companies to hit the road. Astronomical profits and they need a handout.

  4. Frankly, most of national news are controlled by US govt and news media company only need someone able to regurgitate the news controlledt by US govt except the local news.
I hate to see people losing their jobs or company goes bankrupt…

  5. How dare the Government criticize free enterprise about laying off people to survive. The Trudeau government only knows how to spend and print more money causing inflation and debt that will never be paid off. The government needs to lay off CBC completely and prolly 20% of all other departments

  6. The same government that gave the money now grandstanding to get votes acting like they’re appalled that Canadian tax payer money that they approved made the rich richer. This goes on every day in Canada from handing out 100k all the way up with companies across the country that collect the money and do the bare minimum just to meet the basic criteria and then move on to never finish the project. There’s companies that specialize in going after free government money and work as lawyers to extract the cash and find the easy loop holes for a fee to never deliver and not end up in legal battle for monies lent based on amateur government contracts. You can’t blame business to be smarter than government you can only blame government. Maybe Canadians will actually choose business minded people to run the largest business which is Canada and not school teachers in the future. Good luck explaining to your children why they’ll never be able to buy a home in their life.

But hey I guess climate change in the second largest country with 30 million population less than California is really going to make that change in the world. After all pollution stays in our own borders
