Father of boy killed in Edmonton dog attack reveals harrowing details of his son’s final moments

The Edmonton father of a boy who was killed in a dog attack said his son’s death is the hardest thing he’s ever experienced.

Wesley Grist’s son, 11-year-old Kache, was killed on April 1 by two large dogs at his house in south Edmonton’s Summerside neighbourhood. Grist lived there with a roommate who owned the Cane Corso dogs.

Kache was Grist’s only child. The pair spent spring break together after Grist drove to Osoyoos, B.C. to pick the boy up from his mother’s home.

“He was perfect, he was beautiful, he was my best friend. I love my son.”

Grist said his son knew the dogs from previous visits.

“I’ve lived with these dogs for a long time and there’s never been an issue like this. I would never put my son in a spot where he was at risk. I love my son,” Grist said.

“There was nothing that gave us any warnings about this being an issue.”

Grist said he was in the garage and his son in the house when the attack happened. The dad said he thought he heard the dogs making a commotion, and went inside to find the gruesome scene.

“I saw a mess and I didn’t know what it was, I didn’t see what it was, what I was looking at. That’s when I walked across the kitchen and found him,” Grist said, visibly emotional.

Grist said he called 911 but Kache died on scene. An autopsy confirmed the boy died from a dog bite.

Grist said he hasn’t be able to grieve properly because of all of the attention and threats against his roommate.

“My roommate is grieving this too. (Kache) called her Auntie Crystal.”

Both dogs were seize and Grist said they have since been euthanized.

  1. My husband was attacked by a pit bull while standing next to the owner. Completely unprovoked. If he were a child or woman, he would have been dead. So sorry for the loss of this child but never leave a child alone or around any breed of dog with a history of aggression.
