The Ontario Provincial Police (OPP), Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) and policing partners in Ontario and Quebec will announce the results of a interprovincial investigation on Wednesday that they say has made “significan strides” in intercepting stolen vehicles.
The announcement in Montreal comes after it was announced the Ontario Provincial Police would buy four helicopters to be shared between police services in Toronto, Peel Region, Durham and Halton regions to help fight the car-theft crisis.
The OPP has called the provincewide rise in car thefts “unprecedented” and said last week nearly 3,000 cars were stolen in the province over the previous seven weeks.
The majority of Ontario’s stolen vehicles are either driven or transported to Montreal and slipped out of the country through the Quebec city’s port, the province says.
