New York Regional Police are warning members of the Chinese Community about an ongoing extortion scam police say people claiming to be Chinese law enforcement are threatening victims with arrest or deportation there have been multiple reports of the scam and three incidents resulted in victims being defrauded of more than a million dollars
Combined the scammers use phone calls and social media messages to contact the victims and trick them into thinking they are in legal trouble in China they then demand money or personal information to resolve the issue
