Fredericton school food program helping students one smoothie at a time

Tom Collins has been a Grade Three teacher at Lincoln Elementary community school for over two decades he’s noticed a concerning Trend in recent years more children are coming to school hungry it’s always been there it’s just more more of an urgent need now that’s where the school breakfast program comes into

To help we know that kids come to school hungry and so we do what we can to make sure that they get a good start to their day and that they have a successful day of learning in their classrooms Joyce hudin volunteers with the program twice

A month she’s been doing it for nearly a decade I remember a number of years ago delivering breakfast and uh to one of the classrooms and you could tell some of the children that uh were intently looking at you and looking at the food you knew that they were hungry Clayborne

Says there’s a variety of reasons why students might come to school hungry it’s not always Financial some sometimes it’s a time thing sometimes they’re out trying to catch a bus you know at a unreasonably early hour the program is provided through a handful of dedicated volunteers including about a dozen

Students Emma Briggs is in grade five it’s fun because it’s just something that you can do straight in the morning so you’re not wasting school time Colin says the volunteers do more than Feed the Children uh good quality people so that’s a nice role model for our students Clayborn says Rising food costs

Are a concern for the program but it receives funding Through The Breakfast Club of Canada and Community donations she says she’ll do everything possible to keep it going as long as there’s a need this is a great program and if you’re in it you’re lucky and I just
