Canadians don’t have much confidence that provincial governments are ready to address emergency room wait times, according to new Ipsos polling conducted for Global News.

It found roughly eight in ten Canadians would support an expansion of virtual care, and that 63 per cent would support private health care for those able to afford it.

The results of this recent temperature check on the healthcare system were not a surprise to the Canadian Medical Association president Dr. Kathleen Ross, who said that “We need to be able to reassure people that when they need acute care, they can go to the emergency department locally.”

And as health reporter Katherine Ward explains, people are looking for other options to get the care they need in a timely manner.

  1. There is a massive structural problem with our healthcare system that is obvious yet nobody is talking about it. When you receive healthcare services from a provider (Hospital, doctor, lab etc.), when you leave you do not receive an invoice for the services you have just received. How do you know that the Health Service Provider invoiced your Provincial Health Insurance provider the exact health care services that you receive?. More importantly how does your Provincial Health Insurance know? You will notice that Provincial owned Auto Insurance companies do not have this lack of accountability. This lack of accounting is a serious structural hole that is a gateway for organized crime to exploit. Our Health Care system will not get better until this is dealt with.

  2. This is Canada, a country where problems are never solved, they grow and become chronic for decades. The Liberal and Conservative political actors only talk and nothing ever happens so the years and decades will continue to pass and our problem of a sick and weak healthcare system will never be solved.

  3. This was the federal goverments plan and American lobbying groups. TO cripple out healthcare system so we become like the Americans so that the 1% can profit off life and death.

  4. Holland! How will private hurt public, whomever can afford private will free up space for those who can only access public its a win win, you just don’t like the independence of people or the loss off power and revenue!

  5. Well my wife died waiting for a Brain and Lung Cancer diagnosis, the Doctors asked why was this left so long, we could have started Chemo on her Lung Cancer and Brain cancer 6 months ago.

  6. It doesn't help that doctors offices that USED to be walk in clinics no longer take walk ins. Appointment only has become the norm in Mississauga anyways. So then where does somebody go when they NEED medical attention…the emergency room.

  7. You know, it was Tommy Douglas of the NDP that got our Universal healthcare off the ground! It's time for some very capable and charismatic lefty to rise up and save us from ourselves.

  8. Maybe it’s about time that Canada considers the internationally educated healthcare professionals. Instead of asking them to go back to school again & pay thousands of dollars before being allowed to practice here in Canada. Just because they graduated outside Canada it doesn’t mean they’re not qualified to do their job. Human anatomy is the same in all parts of the world. Stop making education as a money making scheme here in Canada!

  9. Investigate the healthcare schools/colleges/ universities here in Canada as well as the licensing bodies. They are using education as a money making scheme. There are lots of immigrants here that are well qualified to do the healthcare jobs but Canada is making it difficult for them to get licensed & start practicing.Immigrants are already offering their services to Canada & yet Canada refuses to accept them not unless they “pay for their licenses “. What a waste of manpower! And then you complain of shortages. The answer is already in front of you.
