The Spree of Erratic Behavior

On the evening of Thursday, Feb. 29, the Calgary Police Service received reports of a man exhibiting erratic behavior and wielding a firearm in the northeast Calgary area. This behavior included attempted carjacking and assault, escalating the situation to a dangerous level.

The First Encounter

The first altercation involved a woman who narrowly escaped harm as the suspect pointed a firearm at her while she was parking her car near her residence. Thanks to quick thinking, she managed to secure herself inside her home safely, avoiding physical injury.

The Second Encounter

Subsequently, two men outside a residence were targeted by the suspect, who demanded keys to a parked vehicle while brandishing the firearm. Fortunately, the men did not possess the keys, leading the suspect to strike the vehicle with the gun before departing from the scene.

The Third Encounter

In a final altercation, a man returning to his parked car was accosted by the suspect demanding his keys. Despite the victim’s attempts to evade the situation, he was struck by an imitation handgun. The victim’s resilience allowed him to escape and call for emergency assistance.

The Active Response

Police swiftly arrived at the scene near Temple Drive and 58th Street Northeast and engaged with the suspect, culminating in an officer firing a shot that struck the suspect in the leg. The suspect was subsequently apprehended and transported to the hospital for treatment of his injuries.

Investigation and Charges

A handgun-style pallet gun was discovered at the scene, prompting the involvement of ASIRT in the investigation. The suspect, identified as Akol Acuil Piok, 36, faces multiple charges including robbery, assault with a weapon, and failure to comply with a probation order. The upcoming court appearance on Monday, March 4, will shed further light on the legal repercussions of this alarming incident.
