A case containing boxes of hockey cards from 1979 was put up for auction and then sold with a closing bid of $ 3.72 million the high price is due in part to the strong possibility of at least 20 pristine Wayne Gretzky rookie cards expected to be found in these
Boxes joining me now from New York to talk more about this is Jason Simmons of Heritage auctions Jason welcome thanks for being here thank you for having me so these hockey cards in these boxes how do we know that there might be uh these Wayne Gretzky cards in them have they
Ever been opened before so they haven’t been opened what we’re talking about is a case of 16 boxes of 1979 OPI hockey so inside these boxes there should be a total of around 10,000 cards and if you do the math it should come out to somewhere between 25 and 30 Wayne
Gretzky rookies and is that what makes uh these cards so valuable yeah um so condition is very important so for this Wayne Gretzky card a PSA 10 which is the best of the best uh condition sold for $3.75 Million by itself once um now there’s no guarantees
That you get a Gretzky that is in perfect condition but what we have here is a a unicorn we’ve never seen a case of OPG hockey like this before it is so yeah so very very rare uh what do you think will be found in these
Boxes I think if the boxes are ever opened um you’re going to see you’re going to see 25 to 30 pack fresh Wayne Gretzky cards and these cards are going to be in hopefully Mint Condition um and if they are then the lucky buyer is
Going to have a have a great time great time with this if if even one Gretzky rookie card is found how much would that be worth so if there’s another PSA 10 out there I would imagine another PSA 10 should sell in that $3 million plus
Range wow this might be a silly question but uh how come they’re not open wouldn’t the buyer want to know what was inside of those boxes before uh paying so much money for them so our consigner had purchased this back in 1979 and frankly this was just the case he never
Got around to opening um he had bought it he had bought two cases he had opened one and built some sets back in 1979 and he stored the other one away just to get to at a later point and after many many years sitting in his uh
Collection he forgot about it and it was his son actually who went through the office and went through boxes and box of material and discovered this case sitting pristinely right there in the house really really quickly I’m just so curious does opening the box lessen its
Value it could it’s a gamble it’s like uh opening up it’s like it’s like the lottery you know you could open it up and find that that one once in a one in a million uh perfect Wayne Gretzky but you could also find uh cards that are offc centered cards that aren’t quite
The condition that you’re hoping for so um that’s one of the reasons why there’s a lot of value to having it as an open case because it has that um that unknown factor to it yeah mystery all right uh this is very interesting we will have to leave it there Jason Simmons Consignment
Director for Heritage auctions thanks so much for being here today thank you for having me
Jason Simonds, consignment director at Heritage Auctions, speaks about the sale of Wayne Gretzky cards for millions.
