Watching these kids dance for the first time with Hoops it’s always exhilarating because their minds are so open it shows me that they’re willing to explore with it and to make it into their own and in the end that’s what hoop dancing is it’s a story about yourself it is your story

It is your healing dance actually you should be aiming for your elbow to our first nation’s people the circle the hoop is one of our most strongest and most sacred symbols the circle has no beginning has no end it’s like the sun the moon the Earth the seasons life

Itself and so that’s all those combined makes a very powerful and spiritual medicine dance the hoop dancing program is a part of our Sports empowerment program it is actually one of the first programs we’ve held with the grant that we received from the government of Canada so this grant is helping us with

Connecting with the community Through Sports very powerful and very significant to the nation as we provide no costs and we cover those costs at first glance it doesn’t look too complicated you know it’s like oh it’s Hoops whatever spit them but once you start getting into it it gets insanely

Because there’s so much factors that you got to put in like the technique with the Hoops spinning them at the right momentums and everything the physics of actually using the Hoops the weaving techniques even the cardio itself it’s really cool and you and it’s it’s kind of hard but not really but you

Get used to it it was really challenging and so the move I don’t know how hoop dancers could do moves like that so yeah it’s really difficult and yeah it feels fun just moving around playing with your friends well doing something fun hoop dancing is a family craft I

Learned from my uncle Quinton who’s a three-time world champion hoop dancer and he gave me the skills necessary to be able to pursue my own hook dancing Journey the goals for the program is definitely having the kids coming back and having that sense of belonging within something that they enjoy to do I

Do it again I love hoop dancing and I just love what like watching it and it’s like so fun to be able to have this craft and be able to do it I don’t want to say easily but like be able to have a good hand on

It takes a lot of dedication and a lot of patience and it’s also one of our highest regarded hell dances there is so it’s it’s an honor for anyone to be able to do this dance successfully and to excel in It

Renowned hoop dancer Arik Pipestem is passing on the art of hoop dancing to youth on Tsuut’ina Nation, helping them form a deeper connection with their culture.
