Alberta car buyer calls out some dealerships over “mandatory” extras

72

She was pretty excited about it license in hand Kaye gray set out on her first car buying experience but that fun day quickly took a U-turn it actually turned out to be quite the nightmare dad Jason was along for that ride armed with research they visited several dealerships including Crow Foot Hyundai

In North Calgary the quote for 2024 Hyundai Elantra luxury just under 33k including ad miny of $7.99 and since Alberta gets winter a group package was added 4,000 for items like winter tires a block heater and nitrogen but the extras didn’t end there another grand was tacked on for a safeguard package

Add-on the taxes and final cash price 39,0 766 extremely frustrating 7K extra not what gray expected not for options he says he was told were not options at all I was required to pay it if I wanted the vehicle itself there telling me it was mandatory company policy that they have

To charge that CR foot Hyundai didn’t respond to Global’s requests but did send gray an email stating the winter package was never mandatory only the Safeguard was why I have to pay us reversing what he says he was told repeatedly pointing to a recording with sales staff as proof I can’t decline

Them yeah so it just come part as a package of it why is it mandatory so this is a store policy by autoc Canada autoc Canada which owns crw foot Hyundai wouldn’t comment on Gray’s case only saying autoc Canada takes its responsibility to conduct business in compliance with all applicable laws

Seriously we have strict policies in place regarding this as for Hyundai Canada it says dealerships are independent businesses that ultimately decide on the final price Crow Foot Hyundai did eventually drop the price but not enough for the Grays she was expecting to come out of there with a vehicle at that day Kaye

Did eventually drive away with a vehicle from another dealership just not her Dream Ride tomasia Silva Global News

A Calgary man is warning others to be aware of “extra, mandatory” costs when buying a new vehicle at some dealerships, adding he was told to “pay up” for these extras or walk away with no vehicle.

“It was extremely frustrating,” Jason Gray told Global News. Gray said the “nightmare” experience started when he went with his daughter to buy her first vehicle.

Gray said they picked a vehicle and then asked about the price. He said he was shocked to see the quote included a number of extra charges — not included in the selling price. Those charges included an almost $4,000 fee for a so-called “Winter group package” and another $999 for a “Safeguard package”.

As Tomasia DaSilva reports, he says he was told to “pay up” for these extras or walk away with no vehicle.

  1. I went with my daughter to Kia, she really wanted a Seltos but $5k in dealership fees, killed the deal because she couldn't afford it. Went to Toyota and they have the same dealership fees plus 10 month to 2 year wait. Some of her friends have taken a flight to BC to find a car, no block heater but much cheaper than Alberta even with no provincial sales tax. If you want a Mazda go to Stoney Trail Mazda, they have the cars and at MSRP.

  2. Every honda and Hyundai and Toyota I’ve shopped around in Langley BC told me that I had to get mandatory extras lol ? ?? another great Canadian scam like real estate agent scams

  3. Weather you're buying a cell phone or a vehicle, this county is full of greasy sales people that constantly lie or deliberately leave info out. Of course Hyundai Canada wants nothing to do with the case lol.

  4. The stereotypical car dealer does it over and over again and that's why, since the invention of the automobile, they will always be thought of badly where morals take a backseat to decency.

  5. I had also faced something similar in Edmonton. It is high time for the regulatory to intervene and have some stringent regulations over unfair business practices by the dealership. The MSRP and the actual cost to buy is very high. In a country where a car is a necessity of daily life but dealerships are making undue advantage of innocent buyers. Someone please tag this video to the regulatory body so they take this seriously.

  6. Don’t do it
Do not get caught in the trap
    Buy from second hand
Consider auctions and find a good mechanic
    So many deals that way
That industry is very good at sucking people dry of money that could be used to eat better for one thing ….

  7. Stealerships are up there as one of the worst places to visit, they make the whole car buying experience terrible. I hope manufacturers start selling directly to customers in the near future. Etching and extended warranty on new cars have to be made illegal

  8. What the dad should’ve realized was this dealership is an AMVIC member, meaning they are forbidden from adding extra fees. The price has to include everything except tax, tire fee, and anything extra the customer wants added. Dad should’ve done his homework and came to the dealer armed with that info

  9. I sold cars for two years and the group I worked charged mandatory's. It was mostly a scam to make money on the back end and to the dealership. It was why I left the industry. I couldn’t in good conscience sell cars anymore (which I loved doing) and gave it all up. The whole industry needs an overhaul and the manufacturers need to start kicking a$$ and taking names. Dealer principles are often making money hand over fist and your paying for it with extras.

  10. If you believe in the free market, this supply and demand market. Walk away and keep hunting. If they can't sell the car to one person, there might be potentially 10 other who will buy it. And if they dont sell it, go back and buy it. I bet this is Go auto . Just go and purchase a toyota. Never buy go auto or auto can
