Scientists expect rare emergence of two broods of cicadas

66

The thing that’s really special to me about cicas this year is the fact that in Illinois both the 17-year and the 13-year cicada are emerging at the same time here’s the state of Illinois we’re going to have the two Broods of cicas uh here where in the north where it’s

Colder we’re going to have the 177e cicas and here in the South where it’s warmer we have the 13year cicas and if we zoom in a little bit right around um Springfield and this is the area kind of in Central Illinois where we would be able to find uh both of them

So the numbers are on the order of billions it’s hard to say exactly how many but but it’s many billions maybe hundreds of billions so those really rare events are the opportunities for those uh cicas to be all out and maybe for uh for the species to uh meet each

Other for uh Crossings between species to occur for cool Evolution to Happen

Scientists are expecting hundreds of billions of cicadas to pop up across parts of the United States this spring. For the first time since 1803, the two groups of the loud bugs will be emerging and overlapping.
