Benn glad ‘Hockey Day in Canada’ to spotlight Victoria, British Columbia

“Victoria, British Columbia is home to Sportsnet’s annual ‘Hockey Day in Canada’ broadcast and Jamie Benn will be proudly keeping an eye on the celebrations while playing for the Dallas Stars in their game against the New Jersey Devils this Saturday. Benn, who hails from Victoria, will be showcasing the beauty of his hometown to a nation-wide audience. With a studio built at Ship Point at Victoria Harbor, Sportsnet’s all-day broadcast will feature all seven Canada-based NHL teams playing, in addition to the highlighting of some of the best parts of Victoria.

Growing up in Victoria, Jamie and his brother, former NHL defenseman Jordie Benn, thrived playing for Peninsula Minor Hockey Association. The small-town hockey vibes of Victoria fostered a tight-knit community and it was an environment that shaped the Benn brothers into the successful athletes they are today.

Benn reminisces about his hometown and the rivalries between teams on the island, having found his love for hockey amidst the passionate and intense games he played. His success in the NHL can be traced back to those formative years in Victoria, which have been crucial to the player he is today. Now in his 15th NHL season, Benn is second to Mike Modano in Stars/Minnesota North Stars history in games played, goals, and points, and third in assists. His impressive career and journey from playing in Victoria to professional hockey will serve as an inspiration to the young hockey players in Victoria.

“It’s incredible to see how far Victoria has come and to have the entire country witness its beauty and hockey spirit,” says Jamie Benn as he looks forward to the ‘Hockey Day in Canada’ event.

The celebration in Victoria has been ongoing throughout the week, featuring the presence of the Stanley Cup, hockey clinics for youth players, a gala dinner, and an all-day festival near the harbor. The ‘Hockey Day in Canada’ broadcast will conclude this week-long celebration, offering a glimpse into Victoria’s rich hockey history and bright future.”

Benn is proud to represent his hometown on the national stage and looks forward to the inspiration that the broadcast will bring to Canada’s next generation of hockey stars.”
