Prague Zoo in Czech Republic welcomed a newborn western lowland gorilla on Thursday, after 10-year-old Duni gave birth to her very first cub.

The western lowland gorilla has been considered a “critically endangered” mammal by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) since 2016.

The zoo plans to transfer the baby to a different zoo once it matures to help the threatened species breed and populate further.

“The birth of the baby and the breeding of it is very important for the whole gorilla’s group, because the social structure of the group is set like that,” Jan Mengr, the institution’s zookeeper said on Thursday.

  1. … why isn't it in a natural environment where it's still protected? … their first thought is when the young Gorilla gets older they're just going to separate it from its family so another facility can profit off of it … sounds very exploitative.

    I do not support this.
