The bodies of three members of the Pelsma family were recovered during a search near the Alexis Bridge in Lac Ste. Anne County, west of Edmonton, on Tuesday.

The family of three — 39-year-old Kelly Pelsma, 37-year-old Laura Pelsma and eight-year-old Dylan Pelsma — had not been seen since Dec. 23. They were reported missing when they didn’t arrive at a family function they were expected to attend.

In a news release issued late Monday, police said investigators believed the Pelsma family had gone off-roading in a utility terrain vehicle, or “side-by-side,” in Lac Ste. Anne County, which is located about a one-hour drive west of Edmonton.

Emergency service personnel, Edmonton Police Air1 Helicopter and ground search and rescue volunteers converged on the family’s last known location.

  1. Terrible tragedy! I had a discussion a few days ago saying that no one should be on pond or lake ice yet due to the mild temperatures. Having a hard time wrapping my head around why they were out there, I thought it would be common sense 🙁

  2. It sounds like somewhere along the line the minimum recommended ice thickness went from 4" (100mm) to 6" (150mm). It used to be only 4" … which I have always felt was too thin.
In fact, I wouldn't trust even 6" of ice UNLESS it has been significantly cold for at least 1 full week prior. I'd rather have 6" of Hard Ice than 12" of Soft Ice !

  3. There is likely much more to this than meets the eye… did they ALL try to swim in freezing water on their way to a scheduled event? They all decided to stop and skate on dangerously thin ice with a child, even with danger signs up? Need more details… not adding up.

  4. Terribly tragic, but what the hell were they thinking taking a vehicle onto a lake when the winter is famously NOT here yet?? Absolutely mind numbing level of ignorance if that is indeed what happened based off the findings…
