Winnipeg fire crews tackle 3 overnight fires on Wednesday - Winnipeg

“Fires Blazed through Winnipeg in a Series of Overnight Incidents”

Winnipeg fire crews have had a busy night, responding to and extinguishing three separate fires that broke out overnight on Wednesday and early Thursday morning.

The first fire ignited in a single-storey fourplex in the 300 block of Manitoba Avenue at 11:29 p.m. and was quickly under control by 11:50 p.m. Thanks to the prompt action by fire crews, no injuries were reported, but all damage was contained to the suite of the fire’s origin, with minimal water damage affecting the other suites. Displaced residents are receiving assistance from the City of Winnipeg’s Emergency Social Services team.

The following fire occurred at a vacant two-storey house in the 600 block of Pritchard Avenue at 11:47 p.m. Notthe first time this house has caught fire, the fire was small and was promptly put out with no further damages reported.

Finally, at 4:42 a.m. on Thursday, a fire broke out in a garage in the 100 block of Selkirk Avenue. Crews discovered two garages engulfed in flames and smoke which had spread to an adjacent duplex. While fighting the fire, one resident was taken to the hospital for further evaluation, and thirteen residents were forced to evacuate.

As roads reopens, residents were urged to be cautious due to the slippery conditions caused by the water used to extinguish the fires freezing. Crews will continue to monitor conditions and apply sand and de-icing agents as needed.

The incidents have not only disrupted the lives of the affected residents, but have also raised concerns about fire safety in Winnipeg neighbourhoods. It’s important that a thorough investigation be conducted into the sources of the fires and what preventative measures can be taken moving forward.

With no clear causes of any of the fires that occurred, the Winnipeg fire crews are reminded of the importance of continued public safety measures. It’s important to investigate and address any fire safety concerns around the city, and to provide ongoing education and resources to keep communities safe and prepared. By remaining diligent and being proactive, similar incidents can be prevented in the future.
